The Death of “The Foot Pump Sanitiser Dispenser”

The Death of “The Foot Pump Sanitiser Dispenser”

If you search the web for Sanitiser Dispensers one of the options offered to you will be the Foot Pump Sanitiser Dispenser. The name and description will vary from foot pump sanitiser dispenser to, “foot operated sanitiser dispenser”, “foot action sanitiser dispenser”, “pedal sanitiser dispenser” and you will even see them “lumped in” as “hands free sanitiser dispensers”. All of the afore mentioned names sound good, they embellish the product, and these grandiose descriptions are the tools which companies use to sell their products. Let’s be realistic, the term, “squidgy bottle with pedal a bin mechanism” could well have a detrimental effect on sales figures.

We have all seen the above product, standing sheepishly at the entrance of some “lesser” establishments (the writer of this blog sips from his cup of bitterness and continues to type). In general, they tend to be “rickety affairs” and we tend to view them as an attempt to be one step up from the squidgy bottle on the 3-legged wooden table, sitting embarrassed to the left of the door as we walk in. To be fair, we all need to step up from the 3-legged table and the squidgy bottle, if anything ever reinvents Arkwright from Open all Hours, it’s the squidgy bottle on the 3-legged table.

The glaring mistake, the Achilles heel of the marketing campaign for “foot pump dispenser” lies in its own description. At a time when the world at large has moved forward to be a more inclusive place, when disability is no longer ignored, when business owners accept and embrace the need to accommodate wheelchair users, someone still tries to market “foot pump dispensers”. The bitterness is deserved, the lack of forethought is unreal. I will not be surprised if councils take a no tolerance attitude to the “foot pump sanitiser dispenser”, indeed I will be disappointed if they don’t. Our local authorities have a strong record in protecting our nation’s wheelchair users and it is only a matter of time before they react to this thoughtless product.
